OITNB Example of Gender Equality

Just wanted to share my input on gender equality, but I want to use OITNB as an example. Laverne Cox is a transgender actor, or should I say actress? He is a male but wants to be recognized as a female. Not only is she transgender in real life, she is transgender in her role for in the hit Netflix show, Orange is the New Black. Her role sparked controversy as soon as the first season was released. I find this to be a great example of Gender-Sexuality. Now, if you are not familiar with the show, Orange is the New Black is a show based on a women’s’ prison. Laverne Cox plays Sophia Burset. Sophia is a transgender woman who was placed in the prison for credit card fraud. Before being placed in the prison, Sophia was a male firefighter. She’s married to a woman and has a young daughter. Sophia finally comes out to her wife, unexpectedly, while trying on one of her wife’s dresses. When Sophia entered prison, she expected to be treated like a lady. She wanted everyone to acknowledge her as one and treat her with the same respect. She even became the prison’s hairstylist. Everyone in the prison looked at her as a woman and never tried to change that. But things got rocky when the prison’s clinic tried to take away her hormonal pills. Without her pills, Sophia became depressed and did not feel as vibrant as she usually does. This is a great example of Gender-Sexuality because today’s society has a hard time accepting what things are. By that, I mean if you are not the gender you were born to be, everyone looks at you with disgust and unbelief. In reality, we are all humans and should be treated equally, but for some reason being LGBT is a hard pill for others to swallow. With that being said, this is why there are so many marches for equality. Everyone wants to be accepted, but we live in a world where if you are something other than what you are supposed to be, you are not accepted and should be ashamed of yourselves.
